Microsoft Teams is fully accessible in your browser - no app download, no IT involvement, no admin rights needed. Go to teams.microsoft.com, sign in with your work account, and you have access to chat, channels, meetings, and files. This article covers everything you need to use Teams effectively from a browser, how to install it as a PWA for a better daily experience, and how to join a meeting as a guest without even signing in.

✅  The quick start: Open Edge or Chrome → go to teams.microsoft.com → sign in with your work email and password → complete MFA. You are in. Nothing to install.

Part 1: Signing In to Teams on the Web

  1. Open Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome - these give the best Teams web experience.
  2. Go to teams.microsoft.com.
  3. Enter your full work email address and click Next.
  4. Enter your password on the Microsoft sign-in page.
  5. Complete the MFA prompt - approve the Authenticator notification or enter the SMS code.
  6. Teams will load in the browser. If prompted to Use the web app instead or Download the desktop app, click Use the web app instead.

💡  Bookmark it. Once signed in, bookmark teams.microsoft.com so you can return without typing the address. In Edge or Chrome, press Ctrl+D to bookmark the current page.

Part 2: What You Can Do in the Browser

Teams on the web covers nearly everything in the full app. Here is what works, what is limited, and where the PWA (covered in Part 5) fills the gaps:

💡  For most PFM users, the browser is enough. Chat, channels, meetings, and files all work fully in the browser. The main advantages of the PWA are better notifications and screen sharing. If you find yourself in a lot of meetings or need reliable notifications, install the PWA - it takes 30 seconds (see Part 5).

Part 3: Joining a Meeting from the Browser

Joining a Teams meeting from a browser link is one of the most common reasons people use Teams on the web - even if they don't have a Teams account at all.

Joining from a meeting invite link

  1. Click the Join Microsoft Teams Meeting link in the calendar invite or email.
  2. Your browser will open a page asking how you want to join. Click Join on the web instead.
  3. Allow the browser to access your camera and microphone when prompted - click Allow.
  4. A pre-meeting screen will appear - choose your camera, microphone, and speaker settings, and toggle your video on or off.
  5. Click Join now to enter the meeting.

Joining from your Teams calendar

  1. In Teams on the web, click the Calendar icon in the left navigation bar.
  2. Find the meeting in your calendar view.
  3. Click the meeting event to open its details.
  4. Click Join to enter the pre-meeting screen, then Join now to enter the meeting.

💡  Camera and mic permission tip:

The first time you join a meeting in a browser, you will be asked to allow camera and microphone access. Click the lock icon in the address bar after allowing it → set Camera and Microphone to Allow permanently so you are not asked again every time.

Part 4: Joining a Meeting as a Guest (No Sign-In Required)

External guests - franchise partners, vendors, or anyone outside PFM - can join a Teams meeting directly from a browser link without signing in or creating a Microsoft account.

  1. Click the Teams meeting link in the email invitation.
  2. The browser will open a page asking how to join. Click Join on the web.
  3. When asked to sign in, click Join as a guest instead.
  4. Enter your name as you want it to appear in the meeting.
  5. Allow camera and microphone access when prompted.
  6. Click Join now. You will be placed in a waiting lobby until a meeting organiser admits you.

⚠️  Guest access depends on meeting settings. If the meeting organiser has disabled guest access or set the lobby to admit only people within the organisation, external guests will stay in the lobby until manually admitted — or may be unable to join at all. Contact the organiser if you are stuck in the lobby for more than a minute.

Part 5: Installing Teams as a PWA for a Better Experience

Just like Outlook, Teams can be installed as a Progressive Web App - a standalone window with its own taskbar icon and reliable desktop notifications, without needing the full desktop app. This is the recommended setup for E1 users who use Teams daily.

Install from Edge (recommended)

  1. Go to teams.microsoft.com and sign in.
  2. Click the install icon in the Edge address bar - a small monitor with a download arrow.
  3. Click Install in the prompt that appears.
  4. Teams opens in its own window with its own taskbar icon. Pin it to your taskbar by right-clicking the icon → Pin to taskbar.

💡  Don't see the install icon? In Edge: click the three dots menu → Apps → Install this site as an app. In Chrome: click the three dots → Save and share → Install page as app.

Part 6: Enabling Browser Notifications for Teams

By default, browser notifications for Teams may be blocked. Setting them up means you get alerted to new messages and meeting reminders even when the Teams tab is not your active window.

Allow notifications in your browser

  1. In Teams on the web, click the three dots menu at the top right of Teams.
  2. Go to Settings → Notifications.
  3. Make sure Desktop notifications is turned on.
  4. If your browser then shows a popup asking to allow notifications from teams.microsoft.com, click Allow.
  5. If you dismissed that popup, click the lock icon in the browser address bar → Notifications → Allow.

⚠️  Notifications only work when the browser is open. If you close your browser entirely, Teams web notifications stop. For notifications that work even with the browser closed, install the Teams PWA (Part 5) - PWA notifications persist in the background.

Part 7: Browser Compatibility

Teams on the web works best in Chromium-based browsers. Here is the full picture:

Browser

Teams web support

Notes

Microsoft Edge

✅  Full

Best experience - recommended by Microsoft for Teams on the web

Google Chrome

✅  Full

Fully supported - the most common browser choice

Firefox

⚠️  Partial

Chat and files work well; meeting features (screen share, video effects) may be limited

Safari (Mac)

⚠️  Partial

Meetings work but some features unavailable; Edge or Chrome preferred on Mac

Mobile browsers

⚠️  Partial

Use the Teams mobile app instead - far better experience on phones and tablets

✅  Recommendation for PFM users: Use Microsoft Edge as your primary browser for Teams on the web - it is pre-installed on all Windows 10 and 11 computers, requires no download, and gives the best Teams web experience of any browser.

Part 8: Tips for Getting the Most Out of Teams on the Web

Navigation shortcuts

  • Ctrl+1 through Ctrl+5: Jump between Activity, Chat, Teams, Calendar, and Files without using the mouse.
  • Ctrl+E: Jump straight to the search bar.
  • Ctrl+Shift+M: Mute or unmute yourself in a meeting.
  • Ctrl+Shift+O: Turn your camera on or off in a meeting.
  • Ctrl+Shift+Space: Temporarily unmute yourself while holding the keys - release to mute again. Useful for quick comments.

Productivity tips

  • Pin important chats: Right-click any chat → Pin to keep it at the top of your list. Useful for your busiest channels or people.
  • Pop out a chat: Click the arrow icon on any chat to open it in its own window - keep it visible while you work in another tab.
  • Mark as unread: Right-click any message → Mark as unread to remind yourself to come back to it.
  • Filter your activity feed: At the top of the Activity feed, click the filter icon to show only @mentions, replies, or missed calls - cuts through the noise.
  • Use the command bar: Press Ctrl+/ to see a full list of keyboard commands available in Teams on the web.

Meeting tips

  • Raise your hand: In a meeting, click the raise hand icon (hand with finger up) to signal you want to speak without interrupting. The organiser will see it in the participant list.
  • Meeting chat: Click the chat bubble icon during a meeting to open the meeting chat - share links, notes, or questions without speaking.
  • Live captions: Click the three dots in the meeting toolbar → Turn on live captions to see real-time transcription of what is being said. Useful in noisy environments or for accessibility.
  • Full screen: Press F11 (or Fn+F11) to enter full-screen browser mode during a meeting - removes browser chrome for a cleaner view.

Part 9: Troubleshooting

Problem

Fix

Browser asks for camera / mic permission every time

Click the lock icon in the address bar → set Camera and Microphone to Allow (not Ask). This saves the setting permanently for teams.microsoft.com.

Can't hear anyone or they can't hear me

Click the three dots in the meeting toolbar → Device settings. Select the correct speaker and microphone from the dropdowns. The browser may have defaulted to the wrong device.

Screen share option is greyed out or not working

This is a known browser limitation in some configurations. Try switching to Edge or Chrome if you are on Firefox or Safari. If still broken, use the Teams PWA instead.

Teams web keeps signing me out

Your browser session is expiring. Make sure cookies for teams.microsoft.com are not being blocked or cleared automatically. Check browser privacy settings or extensions that clear cookies on close.

Notifications not appearing

In your browser, click the lock icon in the address bar → set Notifications to Allow for teams.microsoft.com. Also check Windows Settings → System → Notifications and ensure your browser is allowed to send notifications.

Meeting link opens the browser instead of the app

If you prefer the web version, this is correct. If you want the PWA instead, install it first (see Part 5), then set it as the default by clicking Open in app when prompted.

Video is blurry or freezing

Turn off background effects - these use significant processing power. Closing other browser tabs also helps. If on Wi-Fi, move closer to the router or switch to mobile data.

"This browser is not supported" message

Switch to Edge or Chrome. Microsoft fully supports these two browsers for Teams on the web. Firefox and Safari have partial support.
